How to propagate dahlias and what to pay attention to

How to reproduce dahlias

There are three ways to propagate dahlias: cuttings, sowing and division. Planting is relatively simple and quick, and the growth rates of all three methods are not slow.

Dahlia seed propagation

Dahlia seeds can be propagated. When planting, they need to be germinated first so that they can germinate. Dahlias naturally reproduce by seed propagation. It is best to plant them in spring every year, so that the temperature and climate are more suitable for growth.

Dahlia breeding time

Dahlia has a high survival rate in June-August, and can be propagated by cuttings, which will make its growth faster. Loose and fertile soil is needed for planting.

How to propagate dahlias

Dahlia division propagation

When propagating dahlias by division, the cut tubers need to be planted separately, and then watered thoroughly to ensure that they are in semi-shade and cannot be turned purple by the sun. Increasing light and division after budding is the method of propagation for dahlias with the highest survival rate, but it is slightly more difficult to operate than cuttings.

Dahlia cutting propagation

Dahlia cutting propagation is more suitable for June-August. Select 15-20 cm strong side buds from the dahlia plant. There should be at least 3 buds on the branch. Leave the top 2 buds and cut off all the leaves from the third bud to the bottom. Keep the cut smooth. You can apply rooting powder to the base of the cut to promote rooting.

Dahlia seed propagation

Dahlia sowing propagation is generally carried out in March and April. Sprinkle the seeds on the substrate and cover them with fine soil with a thickness of 3 times the diameter of the seeds. Water the substrate and then cover the container with a film. Leave gaps for ventilation. After sowing, place it in an environment of 20-25 degrees. The seeds will germinate in 7 days.

Dahlia breeding precautions

When breeding dahlias, you need to pay attention to the fact that they need sufficient sunlight during maintenance, otherwise it will lead to poor growth. They also need sufficient water and a suitable temperature environment during maintenance, which needs to be maintained between 20-25 degrees.
