Can I plant onions in June?

Green onions have a long history of cultivation in China. They are valuable and have a wide range of uses. They are an indispensable seasoning for many famous dishes. They have high market demand and a promising future. So is it suitable to plant onions in June? Let’s learn more about it below.

Can I plant onions in June?

June is generally not suitable for growing onions because of the high temperatures and heavy rains, which can easily affect seed germination and emergence. The best time to plant green onions is generally in spring and autumn, but there are some areas where green onions can be grown in summer, but they are relatively rare. And if you plant it in June, you must choose onion varieties that are resistant to bolting, heat-resistant, disease-resistant and high-yielding.

Green onion planting environment requirements

1. Soil

Green onions are suitable for planting in loam with a pH value of 6.5 to 7.5. The soil should be loose, fertile, well-drained and have good air permeability. Among them, the organic matter content in the soil is particularly important for the growth of green onions, because the root system of green onions has a weak ability to absorb fertilizer and needs sufficient nutrients from the soil.

2. Lighting

Green onions do not require high light intensity and are neutral to the length of sunshine time. As long as they undergo vernalization under the action of low temperatures, they can sprout and bloom normally regardless of the length of sunshine time.

3. Temperature

Welsh onion is a cold-resistant crop. Its seeds can germinate normally at 2℃-5℃. Within 7℃-20℃, the germination time of seeds shortens as the temperature rises. The optimum growth temperature is 15℃-25℃. If the temperature exceeds 30℃, the growth will be slow.

4. Moisture

Scallions have weak root systems and poor water absorption capabilities. They prefer moist soil and require high soil humidity. Especially during the seedling stage and the period when the scallion whites are swelling, they need sufficient water to promote growth, but care must be taken to avoid waterlogging and to prevent waterlogging. In addition, water management needs to be adjusted according to the growth stage of the green onion during cultivation. For example, appropriate humidity is needed during the germination period to promote germination; water control is required in the early stage of seedlings to prevent excessive growth; and sufficient water is applied before wintering to ensure safe wintering.

5. Fertilizer

Scallions like fertilizer and require balanced application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. In the early stages of growth, more nitrogen fertilizer is required, while in the later stages, more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are needed. Special attention should be paid to the application of phosphorus fertilizer, because lack of phosphorus fertilizer will lead to poor plant growth and reduced yield. At the same time, attention should be paid to the sulfur content in the onion field. Sulfur deficiency in the soil will affect the yield increase effect.

In general, onions can be planted in June, but the conditions are relatively harsh. Before planting, it is best to comprehensively consider the suitability of the above environmental conditions, such as temperature, light, water, etc., to ensure that the onions can grow healthily and achieve high yields.
