How to grow azalea in the north (home growing method)

How to grow azalea in the north (home growing method)

1. Soil

Rhododendron grows best in acidic soil with good drainage. The alkaline soil in the north needs a small amount of peat soil to be added before use. For potted plants, you can prepare the potting soil yourself, mainly with leaf mold and a small amount of sand to enhance drainage capacity. In addition, a certain amount of cake fertilizer can be added to provide nutrients for its growth.

2. Lighting

Azalea prefers a well-ventilated semi-shady environment. The light should not be too strong. It can be placed in a place with scattered light for a long time. In summer, pay attention to shade and avoid strong sunlight, otherwise the leaves will be sunburned and the plant will die.

3. Temperature

Azalea can grow normally in an environment of 12-25℃. If the temperature is higher than 35℃ in summer, its growth rate will slow down and it will enter a semi-dormant state. Appropriate anti-cold measures should be taken in winter to prevent frostbite of the plants, and the temperature must not be below 5℃. When the temperature in the north is too low, place it in a warm place indoors, or cover the plant with a bag to keep it warm.

4. Watering

Rhododendron has a high demand for water. You cannot wait until the soil is dry before watering it. The substrate must be kept moist at all times. Generally, you need to water it once every 2-3 days, and every day in summer. Do not use tap water directly, it is best to let it sit for a few days before watering. In addition, the water temperature must be controlled well. Water that is too cold will affect the water absorption function of the roots.

5. Fertilization

Rhododendrons are generally fertilized in spring and autumn. During summer and winter when the plants enter dormancy, fertilizers tend to pile up, causing the fertilizer to be too concentrated. Apply cake fertilizer water every 10 days during the growing season. Apply fertilizer once 15 days after flowering to replenish the nutrients consumed during flowering. Apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers before winter to help the plants survive the winter.
