How to plant peony, planting method of peony seeds

1. Planting time

Peony seeds are generally sown as soon as they are harvested. The maturity time of seeds in different regions is different. For example, Heilongjiang generally matures in early September, while Shandong, Jiangsu and other places generally mature in late August, Henan in early August, and mostly in autumn. Sowing at this time can break the dormancy state earlier, which is conducive to rooting and germination. The germination rate in spring is relatively low.

2. Seed selection and germination

Select the peony seeds with full grains, remove the shriveled ones, soak them in water, and pick out the empty seeds floating on the surface. The remaining seeds should be soaked in 50℃ warm water and can be taken out and prepared for sowing after 24 hours. By soaking the seeds and allowing them to absorb water, they can germinate more completely and the germination rate can be increased to 80%.

3. Soil Preparation

Peony is suitable for growing in loose and fertile sandy loam. It is generally prepared with garden soil, river sand and pine needles, and the three can be mixed in a ratio of 5:3:2. Among them, river sand can increase the drainage of the soil and prevent the roots of the plants from being flooded. Pine needles need to be fully decomposed to ensure the acidity of the soil and also have a certain water retention effect.

4. Seeding and maintenance

Sprinkle peony seeds on the soil surface, cover with a layer of fine soil, and water appropriately to keep moist. After sowing, you need to cover the seeds with plastic film to keep them warm and moist to prevent the plants from being frozen in winter. Wait until the spring of the following year when the climate becomes warmer and the plant grows again, then you can remove it, expose it to appropriate amounts of light, and add some fertilizer.
