When to prune clematis

When to prune clematis

January, February and March

You can choose to prune in early spring from February to March. This period of time just ends winter, and some branches may be frozen to death. These branches can be cut off at this time. It is just in the early spring sprouting period, and its sprouting ability is very strong. If it is accidentally pruned too much, it will recover quickly. In addition to cutting off the dead and yellow branches, you should also prune the overlapping and crossed branches, and top and pinch them in time to promote the formation of side branches.

September and October

Its flowering period is from June to September. After the flowers bloom, which is around September, it can be pruned. If it is not pruned, the nutrients will be greatly consumed, causing the plant to grow weak and the quality of flowering will deteriorate next year. First remove the remaining flowers, do not leave any on top, and also shorten the flower branches appropriately, leaving 2-3 sections at the bottom. If some leaves wither, you can cut them off as well.

3. Daily pruning

There are also some withered branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, and injured branches that may appear during the growth process due to normal metabolism. This situation does not require pruning in specific months. They should be cut off as soon as they are found. If they are left on the branches, they will affect other branches. Pruning them can prevent infection and prevent the situation from getting worse.
