Growing directions

Plant divisions in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade; creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera) is a native Appalachian woodland groundcover distinctly different from the sun-loving moss phlox (P. subulata) — P. stolonifera thrives in partial to full shade, producing spreading mats of rounded, evergreen leaves with runners that root at the nodes and producing saucer-shaped, fragrant flowers in violet-blue, pink, or white in mid-spring. After bloom, the mat provides attractive, year-round groundcover under trees and in shaded woodland beds. Much better for shade than the commonly sold P. subulata. 'Blue Ridge' (blue-violet), 'Pink Ridge' (rose-pink), and 'Sherwood Purple' are excellent named cultivars. Essentially maintenance-free once established in suitable conditions.
