Growing directions

Grow in bright, indirect light in a loose, well-drained potting mix amended with orchid bark, and keep evenly moist during active growth while letting the surface dry slightly between waterings. Native to the shaded branches and rock crevices of the Brazilian Atlantic coastal rainforest, this cactus carries flattened, scalloped stem segments that erupt in late winter to spring with vivid star-shaped flowers in red, pink, orange, or white, timed around the Easter holiday in temperate climates. Flower bud formation depends on a cool, dry autumn rest of six to eight weeks with nighttime temperatures near 50-55 degrees F and long uninterrupted nights, much like its Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus relatives. Keep it away from heating vents, cold drafts, and direct sun, all of which cause bud or segment drop.
