Growing directions
Direct-sow seeds 1–2 inches deep after last frost when soil has warmed above 60°F — inoculating seeds with rhizobium bacteria before planting improves nitrogen fixation and yields in soils where beans have not grown before; beans rot in cold, wet soil so waiting for warmth is essential. Bush beans form compact plants and produce all at once (60 days) while pole beans require a trellis and produce continuously over a longer season (65–80 days). Harvest green beans when pods are firm, snap crisply, and seeds inside are just beginning to swell — overmature pods become tough and stringy. Succession-sow every 2–3 weeks for a steady supply throughout summer. Avoid working in the bean patch when plants are wet to prevent spreading bacterial diseases.
