Growing directions
Plant Haskap in full sun in moist, well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil; always plant two or more compatible cultivars for cross-pollination; water regularly during establishment and fruit development; berries ripen 2–3 weeks before strawberries and should be harvested promptly. Lonicera caerulea var. edulis and its cultivated selections (Honeyberry or Haskap) represent one of the hardiest edible shrubs in cultivation — tolerating temperatures to -40°F or below in adapted varieties, and withstanding late spring frosts during bloom thanks to early-season cold-hardiness of the flowers. Two compatible cultivars are essential for reliable fruiting, as the species is largely self-incompatible; many named Canadian and Japanese breeding program selections are available for pairing. The elongated, dark blue-black berries are nutritionally similar to blueberries but with a distinctly more complex flavor — sweet-tart with blueberry, raspberry, and elderberry undertones and a pleasant tartness. The shrubs are extremely long-lived (50+ years), begin bearing in year 2–3 after planting, and require minimal pruning beyond removing deadwood. Excellent for northern gardens where blueberries struggle, and the extremely early ripening season makes them valuable for extending the fresh-fruit season.
