Growing directions
Direct-sow seeds or plant container specimens in well-drained, sandy to average soil in full sun; jacaranda is a South American deciduous tree that is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the world — in spring, before or as the leaves emerge, the entire tree becomes covered in masses of large, tubular, lavender-blue to violet-purple flowers arranged in billowing panicles that transform the canopy into a breathtaking cloud of blue-purple. The flowering display lasts 6–8 weeks and the fallen flowers carpet the ground beneath the tree in a second violet display. The finely divided, fern-like, bright-green, doubly-pinnate leaves are attractive through the growing season. Jacaranda is the definitive 'purple flowering tree' of warm-climate landscapes worldwide — seen lining streets in Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Sydney, and throughout zone 9–11 in the southern United States. It is frost-sensitive, with established trees tolerating brief dips to approximately 25°F in zone 9 — tops may be killed by hard freezes, but established root systems often resprout. Requires a dry season to flower most reliably. An iconic specimen tree for zone 9–11 gardens.
