Growing directions

Grow in bright indirect to full sun in very well-drained, gritty succulent potting mix; Jade Plant tolerates lower light conditions than most succulents but develops the most compact, well-colored foliage with bright indirect light or morning sun. Crassula ovata is a succulent shrub native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa, where it grows in rocky hillsides and dry scrub in dry, well-drained conditions. Over its decades of cultivation as an ornamental houseplant worldwide, it has become one of the most recognizable and widely-owned plants on earth — practically ubiquitous in offices, homes, and gardens across every continent. The thick, oval, glossy, jade-green leaves with red-edged margins and the stout, woody, trunk-like stems that develop over years give well-grown specimens a miniature tree appearance highly prized in bonsai aesthetics. In zone 10–11, established outdoor plants produce clusters of small, star-shaped, pink to white flowers in winter, creating a charming seasonal display. In Asian cultures, Jade Plant is considered a symbol of good luck, financial prosperity, and friendship — 'money plant' is one of its most common names in Chinese and Japanese contexts. Single leaves placed on gritty soil root readily within weeks, making it one of the most freely propagated of all succulents.
