Growing directions
Plant in cool, moist, well-drained soil in early spring, ideally clustered in groups of three or more where the strikingly white, papery, exfoliating bark can be admired year-round against evergreens or dark backdrops. This fast-growing, relatively short-lived pioneer tree tolerates cold climates exceptionally well but struggles in prolonged heat and drought, so it performs best in northern gardens rather than the warmer end of its range. Its golden fall color and open canopy make it a favorite specimen for naturalized woodland edges, and the bark historically provided material for canoes and baskets. Keep roots consistently moist and mulched, since paper birch is prone to bronze birch borer when stressed by heat or drought.
