Growing directions

Root semi-hardwood cuttings or plant container specimens in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, average soil in full sun to partial shade; firethorn is an evergreen thorny shrub that earns its place in the landscape through a spectacular fall and winter display of clustered, brilliant orange, red, or yellow berries that cover the shrub in such abundance they literally hide the foliage — providing one of the most eye-catching ornamental fruit displays available in temperate gardens. White flower clusters in spring attract bees. Excellent as an espalier against a wall or fence, as a barrier hedge (the thorns are fierce), or as a freestanding specimen. Cedar waxwings, robins, and mockingbirds flock to the berries. 'Mohave' (orange-red, disease-resistant), 'Lalandei' (orange, vigorous), and 'Teton' (yellow-orange, upright) are widely grown. Berries are mildly toxic to humans; do not eat.
