Growing directions

Plant root suckers or cuttings in spring in moist to average, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun; quaking aspen is the most widely distributed native tree in North America, ranging from Alaska to Newfoundland and south through the Rocky Mountains to Mexico. Named for the distinctive trembling of the leaves on their flattened petioles in even the slightest breeze, the constant movement produces a shimmering, glittering effect that is uniquely beautiful. Aspen groves are clonal colonies — all trees in a grove are genetically identical, connected by a single underground root system. The famous 'Pando' clone in Utah is estimated to be 80,000+ years old and weighing over 6 million kilograms, potentially the oldest living organism on Earth. Brilliant golden-yellow fall color; white bark provides winter interest. Best in cool, moist climates of the northern states and mountain West; struggles in hot, humid southern areas.
