Growing directions
Chamaemelum nobile is a low-growing, apple-scented perennial chamomile native to western Europe, producing fine, feathery, bright-green foliage and small white daisy flowers with yellow centers from early summer through early fall; the crushed foliage releases a distinctive sweet, fruity, apple-like scent that distinguishes it from the taller German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). Surface-sow seeds in early spring directly in well-drained, poor to moderately fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun or light partial shade; seeds require light to germinate and should not be covered — press them lightly onto the soil surface and keep evenly moist until germination occurs in 7–14 days. The non-flowering cultivar 'Treneague' is propagated vegetatively and used as a fragrant, low-maintenance lawn substitute that releases its apple scent when walked upon; it requires no mowing but does best in well-drained, sunny sites. Harvest flowers by hand when fully open for use in herbal tea; flowers and foliage have traditional uses for soothing teas, topical rinses, and as a mild sleep aid.
