Growing directions
Start seed in warm conditions 6–8 weeks before last frost; scarlet sage is a Brazilian perennial grown as an annual in most climates, producing dense spikes of vivid scarlet flowers that are among the most hummingbird-attractive of all bedding plants. Modern cultivars have expanded the color range to include salmon, coral, white, purple, and bicolors. It performs best in partial shade in hot climates (zone 8 and above), where full sun causes bleaching; in cooler climates it tolerates full sun. The plants bloom continuously from summer until frost without deadheading. In zones 9–11 it grows as a perennial and may persist for several years, becoming more woody at the base. Excellent for mass plantings, containers, and hummingbird gardens.
