Growing directions
Grow in bright indirect light in a well-drained, humus-rich potting mix, keeping it evenly moist during active growth and allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. This Brazilian rainforest epiphyte carries flattened, jointed stem segments with pointed, claw-like serrated edges, the feature that distinguishes it from the smoother-scalloped true Christmas cactus, Schlumbergera x buckleyi; most cactus plants sold in stores in November and December under the name Christmas cactus are actually this earlier-blooming species. Vivid pink, red, orange, purple, or white flowers dangle from the segment tips once the plant has had a cool, short-day autumn rest. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature swings, which can cause buds and even whole segments to drop.
