How to plant garlic

Garlic has a unique flavor and is grown throughout China. It has a very wide distribution range and is a common seasoning vegetable . When planting garlic, you must master the time and method. The following editor will introduce how to plant garlic. Let’s take a look.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Garlic has a wide adaptability to soil, but it is best to choose soil with good air permeability and drainage for planting. Before planting, the soil needs to be deep plowed, generally 20-30 cm deep, to break up soil compaction and improve soil looseness and air permeability. At the same time, clear out stones, weeds and other debris in the field to keep the soil clean.

2. Seed selection and germination

Choose garlic varieties for planting that are adapted to local climate and soil conditions. Generally, garlic cloves with large, white petals, no wounds, no disease spots, and strong terminal buds should be selected as seeds. Generally, soak the garlic cloves in water for about 24 hours, then take them out and dry them.

3. Sowing time

The planting time of garlic varies from region to region. In northern regions, sowing is generally done in spring, while in southern regions, autumn sowing is more common. The specific sowing time should be determined according to local climatic conditions and soil conditions.

4. Sowing method

Sow the germinated garlic cloves in the soil according to a certain spacing between plants and rows. The general plant spacing is 8-10 cm and the row spacing is 20-23 cm. When sowing, the garlic cloves should be inserted into the soil with the bud facing upwards, with a depth of 2-3 cm. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil and compact it lightly.

5. Watering

Garlic needs to have sufficient water throughout the entire process, from seed germination to harvest. After sowing, water needs to be added in time to promote uniform emergence of seedlings. If there is drought during the growth period, watering is needed in time to keep the soil moist, but be careful not to water too much to avoid water accumulation and root rot. During the garlic swelling period, sufficient water should be given to promote the swelling of garlic.

6. Fertilization

In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer, top dressing is also required during the growth period. Generally, some compound fertilizer is applied every month to meet the nutrient needs of garlic growth. Watering should be done immediately after fertilizing to promote the absorption and utilization of fertilizer .

The above is an introduction to how to plant garlic. When planting garlic, you should choose suitable varieties and sizes of cloves, sow them after germination treatment, choose the best sowing period, pay attention to density when sowing, and strengthen fertilizer and water management.
