How to prolong the flowering period of Clivia

Flowering period of Clivia

The flowering period of Clivia is relatively long and it can bloom all year round, but it mostly blooms in spring and summer. It can also bloom in winter if protected. In general, the flowering period of Clivia is relatively long and also has some uncertainty.

When Clivia blooms, the peduncles emerge from the leaf axils, and the flower stems grow in an umbrella shape at the top of the flower. The umbels are terminal and the flowers grow upright. Each inflorescence has as many as 70 flowers, and the styles are very long, deep outside the perianth. The colors are diverse, bright and fragrant, and very beautiful.

Basically, the period from blooming to falling of Clivia can last about 15 to 20 days.

How to prolong the flowering period of Clivia

Fertilization

Clivia needs sufficient nutrients to bloom, and even more nutrients to prolong its flowering period. Therefore, before flowering, you can apply bone meal, fermented fish viscera, bean cake water, etc. as fertilizer. This will make the flower color brighter, the flowers will grow larger, and the leaves will become thicker.

However, when fertilizing Clivia, you should also be careful to avoid applying too much nitrogen fertilizer and insufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, which will result in weak growth or excessive leaf growth, affecting flowering and will not extend the flowering period.

Shading and watering

Another simple way to extend the flowering period of Clivia is to place it in a dark place when the flowers are about to bloom, control watering appropriately, and pay attention to keeping the temperature in a low range, which can extend the flowering period of Clivia by 10-20 days.

It should be noted that the Clivia must be given enough light during its growth period to enable it to photosynthesize and bloom normally. Reducing the light during flowering will have a chance to extend the flowering period.

As for watering, you should reduce it significantly during flowering, but if you want to extend the flowering period, you have to control watering. You can water at half the normal rate.
