How to replenish the roots of banyan bonsai

How to replenish the roots of banyan bonsai

If the roots of a banyan tree grow poorly, have too few roots, or have lopsided growth, you can supplement the roots through grafting. When the roots are uneven in size, you can graft thicker roots. In short, all imperfections can be compensated for by root supplementation.

Banyan tree root remedy

time

It is usually carried out during the rainy season, when the temperature and humidity are relatively suitable, which can promote root growth after grafting.

Choose the location for root filling

According to the shape of the plant, choose the location where you want to fill the roots. Use a sharp knife to cut a tongue-shaped incision of about 2 cm along the surface of the bark at that location, gradually going deeper into the wood layer, and ensure that the cut surface is smooth.

Cut the roots

Cut the roots from a well-growing banyan tree. The color, thickness and length should be determined according to the needs of the root filling. The general length is 15 to 20 cm. Cut the roots into wedges, and the cross-section should be consistent with the shape of the root filling position.

Root supplement

Align the roots with the root filling position, wrap them with 1 cm plastic film, bury the other end of the roots in the soil, and then water them thoroughly. After that, keep the soil moist and it will soon come to life.

Precautions

Don't fertilize

During the root supplementation period, all external nutrients should be eliminated to prevent root rot. After root filling, place the plant in a cool place with sufficient scattered light and pay attention to ventilation. Do not touch the root of the patch to avoid loosening the interface and affecting wound healing.

The strength of root filling

The diameter of the root filling is generally about 0.5~1 cm. If the diameter of the root is larger, the wound will be difficult to heal. In addition, when cutting the interface, do not cut it too deep, otherwise it will not only be difficult to tie and seal, but the survival rate of the root filling will also be reduced.
