How to Propagate Tulips

How to Propagate Tulips

Reproduction method

Tulips are commonly propagated by dividing bulbs and sowing.

Bulb propagation

After the planted mother bulb has grown for one season, many small bulbs will appear around it. The bulbs can be classified by size and planted separately. The large bulbs will bloom earlier and will bloom in the same year they are planted. The small bulbs will take 1 to 2 years to bloom.

Seed propagation

Seed propagation is suitable for large-scale planting and is mostly used to cultivate new varieties. First, choose good seeds and you can mix and sow multiple varieties. Sow the seeds in pots indoors in October and cover them with plastic film outdoors. They will germinate in the spring of the following year. It blooms from March to April.

Maintenance points

Temperature control

The room temperature was maintained at 0-25°C during the growth period of the plants. For bulbous plants, root growth is important. The temperature of tulip roots should be above 5℃ and below 14℃, with 10℃ being the best. In addition, tulips are extremely cold-resistant and can safely survive the winter at -35℃.

Moisture Management

Do not water too much during maintenance, as the water requirement will be wavy at different times. The plant needs more water within one week after planting, so you need to water it enough. After germination, especially during flowering, the plant needs less water, so apply "small amounts and multiple times".

During the growth period of tulips, the air humidity should reach 80%. Too dry or too wet will affect the growth of the plants.

Lighting conditions

In the sun, the germination of the bulbs will be inhibited. When planting, you should plant them deeply and provide moderate shade to avoid the effects of sunlight on the bulbs.

Bulb storage

The quality of bulb storage directly affects whether tulips bloom or not. The bulbs should be placed in a ventilated, dry and cool place. If conditions permit, the bulbs can be placed in a cold storage at 15~17℃.
