According to legend, Zhuge Liang became Liu Bei's military minister, in charge of military rations and taxes. Because Liu Bei had a huge army, the demand for food and fodder was relatively large, and the burden on the people was also relatively heavy. The people were hungry, cold, and in a state of panic. Once again, Zhuge Liang went on a secret tour and saw a wild vegetable called "turnip". He learned from an old farmer that this vegetable was full of treasures. Both the leaves and stems could be eaten, and the leftovers could be made into pickles. This vegetable could become the main dish during the lean season.

Zhuge Liang was very interested in this vegetable. He asked an old farmer about the method of growing "turnip" and ordered his soldiers to plant it widely in the army. On the one hand, it could supplement military rations, and on the other hand, it could be used as livestock feed. It was economical and achieved two goals at one stroke. From then on, the army had sufficient rations and the pressure on the people was greatly relieved. The vegetables grown by Zhuge Liang were later called Zhuge vegetables.
