How long does it take for garlic to sprout?

Garlic , as a common vegetable , is not only rich in nutritional value, but also loved by people for its unique spicy taste. If you want to grow healthy and lush garlic, it is crucial to understand the appropriate planting time and master the correct planting techniques . So how long does it take for garlic to sprout? Let’s take a look below.

1. How long does it take for garlic to sprout after being planted?

After garlic is planted, it usually takes 7-14 days for it to germinate. The germination time of garlic will be affected by factors such as temperature and humidity. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, garlic can germinate in about 5 days, while in a lower temperature environment, it may take 10-15 days or even longer to germinate.

2. Planting time of garlic

Garlic prefers cool conditions, so planting times vary by region. Generally speaking, garlic planting can be divided into two methods: spring sowing and autumn sowing.

1. Spring sowing: In northern regions, due to the cold winter climate, it is not suitable to plant garlic in autumn, so spring sowing is often used. Spring sowing time is generally concentrated in April. If the sowing time is too early, the crops may suffer from frost damage; if the sowing time is too late, the yield may be low and the quality may be poor.

2. Autumn sowing: In the Yangtze River Basin and the areas to its south, the climate is warm and humid. Planting garlic in autumn is conducive to the safe wintering of the seedlings. Generally speaking, autumn sowing begins in mid-to-late September each year. If sowing is too early, the seedlings will grow too vigorously before wintering and consume nutrients, reducing their ability to overwinter; if sowing is too late, the seedlings will be small, the tissues will be tender, the root system will be weak, the accumulated nutrients will be less, and the cold resistance will be lower.

3. Garlic planting techniques

1. Preparation before sowing: Choose a flat, deep soil and well-drained plot for planting. Before sowing, the land should be carefully prepared to make the soil loose and firm. At the same time, apply appropriate amounts of farmyard manure and compound fertilizer according to soil fertility.

2. Sowing method: Garlic is generally sown in holes or rows. When sowing in holes, use a shovel or garlic rake to dig furrows about 5 cm deep according to the requirements for plant spacing. Then insert the garlic cloves into the furrows, keeping the distance between the cloves about 10 cm. When sowing in rows, use a rake to dig furrows 3-4 cm deep, then sprinkle the garlic cloves into the furrows and lightly cover them with soil using a rake. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil and compact it lightly.

3. Field management: During the growth period of garlic, fertilization, watering, weeding, and pest and disease control should be carried out in a timely manner. When watering, be careful to keep the soil moist to avoid waterlogging or drought. When applying fertilizer, apply phosphorus fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer in a timely and appropriate amount according to the soil fertility and the growth stage of garlic. When weeding, use chemical weed control or manual weed control to keep the field clean. When preventing and controlling diseases and insect pests, we must adopt a prevention-oriented, integrated control strategy to promptly detect and control the occurrence of diseases and insect pests.

4. Harvest and storage: Garlic is generally harvested between mid-to-late May and June each year. Before harvesting, observe whether the bottom leaves of the garlic turn yellow and whether the garlic skin becomes thinner. When harvesting, pull up the garlic with the roots, dry it in the sun until the leaves are dry, cut the garlic, dry it and store it. When storing, make sure to maintain a dry, ventilated, and light-proof environment to prevent moisture, mold, and insect infestation.

In short, in order to grow healthy and lush garlic, in addition to choosing the right planting time, you also need to master the correct planting techniques.
