How to propagate petunia (how to grow petunia seeds and what to pay attention to)

A flower friend asked : I have 3 pots of petunias. Two of them have many flowers but I can hardly find any seeds. The other one has few flowers but the branches are full of seeds. Question 1: What's going on? Are there male and female petunias? I collected a lot of seeds today. Do I need to process these fresh seeds? Can I get seedlings if I sprinkle them directly in the soil?

Petunia is a horticultural variety of morning glory. If we are in the countryside, we can easily see morning glory. Most of them are climbing vines and grow everywhere.

However, petunia is a plant with a short stem and blooms a lot. It is easy for it to overflow the pot and it is no problem for it to bloom hundreds of flowers at a time.

There are two ways to grow petunias. One is to buy seeds, and the other is to buy seedlings . In fact, it can reproduce by itself, and it is mainly propagated through seeds and cuttings.

①Seed propagation

First, let's talk about seed propagation. If we grow petunias at home, if it is a single-petal variety, it will generally be able to successfully pollinate as long as there is wind after it blooms, and the seeds will mature after successful pollination.

When mature, its seed pods will turn into a gray-brown color and we can collect them directly.

For the collected petunia seeds, they can be collected and sown at any time, but the sowing temperature must not be lower than 15 degrees.

When sowing, find a small container and put the seeds in it. Then cover it with a thin layer of 1-2 mm soil. You can directly cover it with some vermiculite to ensure that the soil is moist.

After sowing, ensure the temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees and get some sunlight, it will germinate quickly in about a week.

After its seedlings grow out, we will remove the top when it grows two or three pairs of leaves. The side buds will continue to grow and the top will be continuously topped. In the end, it will form multiple side buds that bloom together and look very beautiful.

The seedlings sown from petunia seeds have very strong flowering performance and good growth, so it is recommended that you use seed sowing.

② Cutting propagation

The second method is cuttings, which is also very simple, as long as the temperature is not lower than 15 degrees.

We directly keep the branches for cuttings about 5 to 10 centimeters, and keep at least 5 to 6 leaves. Do not dry the pruned branches.

What we need to do is cut the branches, find a container, add some water and rooting liquid into it, and then soak the branches for about 20 minutes.

After soaking, find soil with good air permeability and a smaller container. You can use a plug tray and insert it directly into the soil.

After the cuttings are done, water them thoroughly, add rooting liquid, and then place them in a place with scattered light and good ventilation.

During the period of cuttings, make sure to spray the leaves with a spray bottle every day to prevent them from wilting too much. The soil in the pot must not lack water. It will gradually recover in 1 to 2 weeks at most.

After the roots have grown well and it starts to grow normally, it proves that the root system has grown well. We can then transplant it into a new pot and plant it there to let it grow and bloom.

Summarize

Petunia is mainly propagated through these two methods, but the root system of seedlings propagated by cuttings will be weaker in the later stage, and the flowering performance is much weaker than that of seed sowing, and the number of flowers will be much less.

So if you want to see the effect of bursting flowers, it is best to choose seed sowing, or you can directly buy seedlings sown from seeds.

It is very easy to grow. In normal care, you need to expose it to more sunlight and make sure it does not lack water. Generally, water it thoroughly when the soil surface is dry.

As for fertilizer, use multi-element fertilizer or high nitrogen content fertilizer during the growing season to promote the sprouting of more side branches and rapid formation.

If you want it to bloom, choose one with high phosphorus content and sufficient other elements, such as Huaduoduo No. 2, to promote its continuous growth and production of flower buds.

It is a flowering machine. If you follow Xiao Qi's method, there will be no problem in raising it. If you want to propagate it, you can make reasonable choices and it will easily survive.
