Where do cocoa trees grow?

The cocoa tree grows vigorously, with a hard trunk and a height of about 12 meters. The leaves are oval, leathery, and up to 30 centimeters long. The flowers are pink in color, with a small and smelly fragrance, and grow directly on the branches. The fruit is called cocoa pod, which is oval in shape and yellow-brown to purple. The fruit is similar to a pomegranate, and there are many cocoa beans in the same fruit.

Cocoa trees mainly grow in tropical regions, distributed between 20 degrees north and south latitude, and in tropical rainforest areas with sufficient rainfall at altitudes between 30 meters and 300 meters. Newly planted trees begin to produce fruit after 5-6 years, and each tree can produce 60 to 70 fruits per year. It enters the high-yield period after 8-10 years.

The cocoa tree prefers to grow in an environment with high temperature, high humidity, fertile and slightly acidic soil. It requires an annual average temperature of 22.4 to 26.7 degrees in the cultivation area, a monthly minimum average temperature of 15 degrees, an absolute minimum temperature of 10 degrees, and rainfall of 1400 mm to 2000 mm. It avoids strong winds and waterlogging.

The cocoa tree is native to tropical America. It is resistant to high temperatures but not cold. It can only grow in Hainan Province, the southern coastal areas and a few areas of Xishuangbanna in my country, because these areas can basically achieve a frost-free period all year round.
