Reasons why wood ash and ammonium nitrogen fertilizer cannot be mixed

Wood ash is light and alkaline. It is easily blown away by the wind when dry and easily washed away by water when wet. Contact with ammonium nitrogen fertilizer can easily cause the nitrogen element to volatilize and become ineffective. Therefore, ammonium nitrogen fertilizer cannot be mixed with wood ash.

Reasons for not mixing

Wood ash contains potassium carbonate, which is a strong base and weak acid salt. It is alkaline when hydrolyzed, and the hydrolysis solution of ammonium ions is acidic. When the two are mixed, a double hydrolysis reaction will occur, 2NH4++CO32-2NH3↑+CO2↑+H2O, NH3. H2ONH3+H2O.

Ammonia gas is easy to escape, causing the equilibrium to shift to the right, and the concentration of ammonium ions in the soil decreases, thereby reducing the fertilizer efficiency. Therefore, ammonium nitrogen fertilizers cannot be mixed with alkaline fertilizers.

Characteristics of ammonia nitrogen fertilizer

1. Easily soluble in water

Ammonium nitrogen fertilizers are easily soluble in water and can produce ammonium ions and corresponding anions, which can be directly absorbed and utilized by crops.

2. Can be adsorbed by soil colloid particles

The ammonium ions in ammonium nitrogen fertilizers can be adsorbed on the soil colloid particles after exchanging with the existing cations on the soil colloid particles.

3. Easy to decompose under alkaline conditions

Ammonium nitrogen fertilizer will decompose when it encounters alkaline substances, releasing ammonia gas and volatilizing and losing it.
