How to prune peony

When to prune peonies

It is generally more appropriate to prune peonies about half a month after germination in spring each year. They can also be pruned during the bud stage and a third pruning can be done in late autumn.

The pruned branches of peony can be used for cuttings. Choose strong branches of 10 to 15 cm, keep a few leaves on the top, cut off the leaves at the base, choose a good substrate and disinfect it, then insert the branches directly into the prepared substrate, water it enough and cover it with plastic film to keep it moist.

How to prune peony branches and leaves

Peonies need to be pruned before, during and after flowering. Before flowering, weak branches need to be pruned away, leaving only strong branches. The main branches also need to be pruned, leaving only one or two relatively strong flower buds on the strong main branches to ensure that the flowers bloom better.

During the flowering period, it is necessary to pick off some of the withered flowers in time to reduce nutrient consumption, accumulate nutrients for the plant, and ensure that the unopened buds bloom more brightly and luxuriantly.

After the flowering period, the main thing is to prune branches that lack nutrients, cut off weak branches, diseased branches, dead branches, and broken leaves, reduce nutrient consumption, and ensure that the plants have more nutrients to continue growing.

Tips for pruning peony

Pruning peony is relatively simple. It mainly involves pruning off the diseased and weak branches, withered flowers, and some overly long branches and buds of the plant to avoid nutrient consumption, which is beneficial to the growth of peony.

Peony pruning makes it grow faster

If you want the peony to grow fast, you can directly cut off the thin branches and buds in the peony plant, which can ensure that the plant has sufficient nutrition and promote rapid growth of the plant.

Peony pruning and flowering

If you want the peony to bloom, you need to thin out the overly dense branches to ensure good ventilation and light transmission, and cut off most of the leaves on the branches, leaving only 5 to 7 leaves. This will ensure that nutrients are supplied to the buds and promote flowering.

Tips for pruning peony

After pruning the peony, you must take good care of it. It is best to move it to a diffuse light environment indoors for maintenance. Also, be sure to stop watering it for 2 to 3 days right after pruning it, and then resume normal cultivation after the cut ends are dry in the shade.
