How to propagate Magnolia grandiflora

How to propagate Magnolia grandiflora

1. Seed propagation method

Seed propagation is the most basic method and can be used for large-scale propagation.

Generally, a Magnolia grandiflora that is more than 15 years old is needed as the mother plant, from which seeds are collected. After collecting the seeds, a method is needed to preserve them, and this method is stratification. Generally, sowing is done between the 15th and 30th day of March of the following year.

First you need to dig a seed trench, then plant the seeds in the trench and cover them with a layer of soil to fill the trench. Lightly compact the soil without digging out the seeds. The seeds will slowly germinate after being planted. Pay attention to shade, and water and spray them frequently. You can apply some fertilizer, but not too much.

2. Grafting propagation method

You can use bud grafting or branch grafting. Generally, the survival rate of bud grafting is much higher than that of branch grafting. The general time for grafting is in early spring just before the buds begin to sprout, or in autumn when the shoots mature.

3. Cutting propagation method

Generally, from early May to mid-June each year, we select stronger branches from young magnolia flowers. Generally, choose one that is about ten centimeters long, and leave two leaves.

Then quickly cut off the selected branches from the bottom, dip them slightly in the indolebutyric acid solution, and then immediately carry out cutting propagation.

The seedbed is generally made of clean, hygienic, wet sand, and inserted at a spacing of fifteen by four centimeters. Then the leaves on the branches should be tilted to the other side, and never overlap or stay close to the ground.

After cuttings, be sure to water them thoroughly, then cover them with a layer of plastic wrap, and make sure to provide shade, usually a layer of straw mat will do. After the cuttings are successful, be sure to remove weeds and apply fertilizer. Generally, it can be transplanted after one year of growth. The time for planting can be chosen in late autumn when the leaves fall or in early spring.
