How to propagate peony by division

How to propagate peony by division

Time Selection

When we choose to propagate peonies by division, we usually choose the period from the autumnal equinox to the frost every year. Because the peony is in a semi-dormant state at this time, its growth is relatively slow, but it will continue to grow nutritionally for a considerable period of time. This can reduce the impact of division cultivation on root growth, and some roots or plant buds can grow after division.

If the division is too late and the plant grows slowly, it will be difficult for it to grow roots. The growth ability of the divided plants will be very weak, and they will be intolerant to drought and difficult to survive.

Division method

We first need to choose a strong peony plant that has grown for more than three years as the mother plant, then dig out the peony with its roots, remove the soil at the roots, and dry it in the sun for about a day or two, so that the damage to the roots can be reduced to a certain extent when dividing the plants.

When dividing the peony, you should cut it according to the texture of the root. If the root of this peony is very large, you can divide it into more small parts, but if it is small, you can divide it into fewer parts. The separated part should have a complete root system and retain the tiller buds at the neck. Then mix sulfur and soil and apply it to the wound of the divided plant. After that, you can plant the separated part in the soil. When cultivating, pay attention to keep the roots of the peony upright. After planting, tamp the soil firmly and water it several times to ensure that the soil and roots are completely integrated. During the first winter, you need to keep warm.
