How to propagate lilies

How to propagate lilies

Growth habit

Lilies like to grow in a cool and dry environment. If the soil is too moist, the bulbs will rot and die. Lilies do not have high requirements for soil, but thick, loose and fertile sandy soil is preferred.

Reproduction method

The reproduction methods of lily are divided into asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction includes scale reproduction, seed ball reproduction and bulbil reproduction.

Scale reproduction

In autumn, select healthy scales and soak them in a specific solution for about 30 minutes, then dry them in the shade with the base facing downward. Insert about 1/3-2/3 of the scales into the seedbed and cover them with straw mats to provide shade and moisture. After about 20 days, several small bulbs will form at the bottom of the scales.

Bulb propagation

Collect small bulbs from healthy and disease-free lily plants, disinfect them, and then sow them with a sowing distance of 25cm×6cm.

Bulbous propagation

When the bulbils mature in summer, they are harvested, mixed with moist fine sand, and stored in a cool and ventilated environment. In September and October, the bulbils are sown on the seedbed with a row spacing of 12-15cm and a depth of 3-4cm, and then covered with a layer of fine soil and a layer of straw mat.

Sexual reproduction

Collect the mature seeds in autumn, sow them in the seedbed, and small bulbs will be produced in the autumn of the following year.

The above is how to propagate lilies! I believe that if flower lovers cultivate patiently and care carefully, they will be able to breed more and more beautiful lilies!
