Rose planting time and method

Rose planting time and method

Growth habit of rose

Rose has strong adaptability to the environment and is cold-resistant and drought-resistant. It is suitable for planting in slightly acidic sandy loam that is rich in organic matter and well-drained. It likes plenty of sunlight, smooth ventilation and sheltered environment. It needs shade in summer and is relatively cold-resistant. It will go dormant when the temperature is below 5 degrees in winter. If the high temperature in summer continues to be above 30 degrees, it will enter a semi-resting state.

Rose planting time

Roses are usually planted in spring before they sprout, or in autumn when the temperature drops. The survival rate of roses planted in these two seasons will be higher. Do not choose spring when the temperature has started to rise.

Rose planting methods and key points

1. Soil

Roses have a wide adaptability to soil. Most varieties prefer fertile, moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a pH of about 6.5. It is important to renovate the soil and apply base fertilizer in advance to facilitate subsequent management.

2. Planting

Sowing should be carried out when the ambient temperature is 5℃-10℃. Spot sowing, row sowing or pot sowing can be adopted. The spacing between seeds is 3 cm. After sowing, a layer of plain sand should be covered on the seeds and watered thoroughly. Generally, seedlings will emerge about 40 days after sowing.

3. Seedling cultivation

Before sowing rose seeds, they need to be disinfected to improve their germination ability and increase the germination rate. Soak the seeds in clean water for about 10 hours, and then mix them with pesticides according to the pests and diseases that need to be prevented and treated. After sowing, they need to be carefully managed to promote seed germination. After germination, you can choose to transplant them immediately.

4. Maintenance and management

(1) Sunlight: Roses like sufficient light stimulation and should be exposed to more than 6 hours of sunlight every day. This requires choosing a good location for placement. They should not be placed in a dark place for a long time. If the light is not good, only leaves will grow but no flowers will bloom. Even if flowers are produced, the color will not be bright and the fragrance will not be strong.

(2) Water: Roses like to be replenished with water, but water accumulation is not allowed. The frequency of watering should be determined according to the season. In spring and autumn, water them normally. In midsummer, the temperature is relatively high and the evaporation rate is high, so it is very important to water them at this time. It is necessary to clearly distinguish between dry and wet. During the winter dormancy period, water less and maintain a dry and wet state on a daily basis.

(3) Fertilization: Roses have certain requirements for fertilizer supplementation. A large amount of nutrients are needed for the flowers to bloom. The amount of fertilizer to be applied varies in different seasons. In spring, fertilizer should be applied every 4-5 days. In May and June, the number of flowers in bloom is relatively large, so regular fertilizer application should be ensured.

5. Pest and disease control

Common diseases of roses are powdery mildew and black spot, both of which appear on the leaves. Prevention and control should be done in advance. Disinfection with lime water should be used to prevent the disease. After infection, the diseased leaves should be cut off and then sprayed continuously for at least 2-3 times. The main pests that infect it are aphids, and longhorn beetles can also cause great harm to the plants. Remove diseased branches and leaves in time and spray the medicine accordingly.

6. Harvest

Roses can be harvested 1 to 2 days before flowering, when the buds have not yet opened. The time of harvesting also depends on the variety. Red and pink varieties can be harvested when the first two petals slowly unfold and the sepals are in an inverted position. The yellow variety can be harvested earlier than the red and pink varieties, and the white variety can be harvested later than the red and pink varieties.
