When is the best time to plant rapeseed in the south?

Rapeseed has strong vitality and is a relatively cold-resistant crop, so it is distributed in many places in my country. Moreover, it can be grown in both the north and the south, but the growth in the south is not as good as that in the north, as it is more restricted by land. So when is the best time to plant rapeseed in the south? Let’s take a look below.

1. When is the best time to plant rapeseed in the south?

Most of the rapeseed grown in the southern region is winter rapeseed, which is planted from September to November each year. Generally, rapeseed planted in autumn will bloom in the spring of the following year and be harvested in May. The entire growing process of rapeseed, from sowing to harvesting, takes 7 months. However, due to different weather conditions and environments in the planting areas, there will be some differences in the specific sowing time and harvesting time.

2. Rapeseed high-yield cultivation technology

1. Selection of varieties

It is better to choose hybrid rapeseed seeds for high-yield cultivation in autumn, because hybrid rapeseed seeds have strong growth potential and are easy to sprout before winter. Please note that hybrid rapeseed seeds can only be used as seeds in the first generation.

2. Seedbed preparation

The seedbed is selected in a rice field that is higher, sheltered from the wind, sunny, and has loose and fertile soil. Generally, rapeseed seedlings cultivated in one acre of seedbed can meet the transplanting needs of 5-6 acres of land. Rapeseed seeds are small, so the soil in the seedbed must be finely prepared. Apply 1500-2000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 15-20 kg of phosphate fertilizer per mu. After plowing and harrowing, dig furrows to make beds. The beds should be 1-1.3 meters wide and about 20 centimeters high. The soil on the bed should be fine, loose and flat.

3. Sowing and seedling raising season

Most rapeseed cultivation in the southern region is done in rice fields, and high-yield varieties generally have a long growth and development period, so it is necessary to make good arrangements for crop rotation. Generally, early-maturing varieties such as Za 02 and Za 09 are suitable for sowing around September 15. Medium and late maturing varieties are sown in early September. Among the same type of rapeseed varieties, we should grasp the principle that early and mid-maturing varieties have a relatively late sowing period, while late-maturing varieties should be sown early. Dry the seeds for 1-2 days before sowing. Do not expose the seeds to the sun. When sowing, use 10-16% salt water to select seeds, remove the empty seeds floating on the water surface, pick out the full seeds below, then rinse with clean water, and then sow after drying. Generally, sowing can be adopted in batches, with a sowing amount of 500-600 grams per acre of seedbed. Before sowing, the seeds are weighed in the beds, and then the seeds are mixed with a small amount of fine soil or wood ash and spread evenly on the bed surface. After sowing, fine soil is sprinkled to cover the seeds. Thin out the seedlings in the morning when the rapeseed seedlings have three true leaves, and keep the seedlings about 8 cm apart.

4. Transplant in time

Selecting strong seedlings and transplanting them in time is the primary link to ensure the quality of cultivation. If transplanting is too late, the temperature will be low, the rapeseed will grow slowly, and the seedlings will be easily damaged by frost. Strong seedlings are the basis of high yields. Strong seedlings have many roots, lush leaves, thick stems, are short and strong, not tall, free of diseases and insects, and are easy to take root and survive after transplanting. For autumn cultivation of rapeseed, choose strong seedlings and complete transplanting before October 15th. The standards for strong rapeseed seedlings are: the rapeseed seedlings are upright and not too tall, the stems are short and thick, the average seedling height is 16-20 cm, there are 5-7 green leaves, the rhizome is 6-7 mm thick, the leaf nodes are dense, the petioles are short, the leaves are broad and thick, and the seedlings are about 30 days old. The transplanting period is generally 26-30 days after sowing, and should not exceed 35 days.

5. Reasonable density planting

The planting density of hybrid rapeseed is 8,000 to 12,000 plants per mu, with 10,000 plants being generally preferred. Fertile fields or plots with relatively high fertilization levels should be planted sparsely, and vice versa.

6. Scientific fertilization

Scientific fertilization is an effective measure to increase rapeseed yield. The fertilization for autumn high-yield cultivation is heavy base fertilizer and early topdressing. It is required to apply sufficient base fertilizer, apply topdressing early, increase seedling fertilizer, apply winter fertilizer heavily, apply stalk fertilizer early and lightly. The amount of base fertilizer should account for 60% of the total fertilizer. To produce 200 kg of rapeseed per mu, 18-20 kg of pure nitrogen is required per mu, of which 50% is base fertilizer, 30% is seedling fertilizer, and 20% is stalk fertilizer. 9-10 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, 9-10 kg of potassium oxide and 0.25-0.5 kg of borax are applied once as base fertilizer.
