Fig planting methods and management

Fig planting methods and management

As the new darling of the fruit world, figs are known as one of the "fastest-producing" fruit trees for their short fruiting period, abundant yields, and low incidence of pests and diseases. These characteristics not only make figs a "high-priced internet celebrity" in the market, but also make them a favored planting option for many rural entrepreneurs. Let’s learn about the planting and management of figs.

1. Variety selection

It is recommended to choose fig varieties with high yield and good quality, such as Brooke Red, Purple Fruit, Bordeaux, Purple Treasure, 108B, 110C, 118D, and 121E. These varieties are not only disease-resistant and adaptable, but also have large fruits, high sugar content and a fresh taste.

2. Planting plot selection

The fig tree has a well-developed root system, so it is suitable to choose a deep, well-drained, slightly alkaline or neutral sandy loam. If the soil is acidic, it is recommended to use limestone to improve it.

3. Cultivation and planting

Buy fig seedlings on the market, mainly planting in spring and supplemented by autumn planting. Spring planting time is from mid-March to early April, and autumn planting is at the end of November. When planting, dig deep holes, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and water thoroughly. The row spacing should be about 2 meters and the plant spacing should be about 1.5 meters.

4. Fertilizer and water management

In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer, figs need top dressing once every two months. Before fruiting, nitrogen fertilizer is the main fertilizer, and phosphorus, potassium and calcium fertilizers are added during the fruiting period. After topdressing, turn the soil and water it to keep the soil moderately moist.

5. Pest and disease control

Figs have fewer diseases and pests, but they need to be prevented from pests such as rust, anthracnose and longhorn beetles . Through proper field management, the risk of pests and diseases can be effectively reduced.

The above are the key points of planting and management of fig trees. Friends who want to plant fig trees should first fully master the planting techniques before trying.
