How to Propagate Poinsettia

How to Propagate Poinsettia

1. Time selection

The time for reproduction is after the flowers have faded in early spring, which is between April and May. This period is a good time for plant growth and development, and the chances of survival and rooting will be relatively high.

2. Cuttings

Choose a two-year-old healthy plant and cut branches from it, about 15-20cm in length. Two or three buds should be retained on the upper end to ensure good growth in the future. Then fill the basin with water, put the branches in to soak, and take them out after about 24 hours to dry.

3. Prepare the soil

You can use a clay pot or a sink for cuttings. The choice of substrate is also very important. You can choose a substrate with a softer texture and a transparent effect to facilitate the drainage of water and prevent water accumulation and rot.

4. Take cuttings

Insert the cut branches into the substrate at an angle to a depth of about 10 cm. After the cuttings are completed, lightly compact the loam, but do not press too hard to prevent it from being compacted too tightly.

5. Post-maintenance

After the cuttings are completed, water them sufficiently and place them in a cool environment. They will take root and sprout in about 15 days. One and a half months after the plant takes root, you can apply some low-concentration fertilizer to promote growth.
