How to turn a gardenia potted plant into an old bonsai?

1. Remove the plant from the pot

Choose a healthy gardenia, trim off any excess branches and leaves, then remove it from the pot and gently shake off the soil, being careful not to damage the roots.

2. Root washing and root pruning

Gently rinse the root system with running water. After washing, cut off rotten and diseased roots, especially roots with root nematodes, and retain fibrous roots and fine roots.

3. Disinfection

Soak the trimmed roots in a 500~1000 times diluted potassium permanganate solution for 2~3 hours.

4. Soil preparation

Mix slightly acidic sandy red soil, humus soil, and coarse sand in a ratio of 7:2:1 to prepare potting soil. If you have the luxury, you can use Akadama soil mixed with a little garden soil.

5. Planting in pots

Place the plant in the pot, not too deep, and be careful not to get the roots stuck. After adding soil, water it thoroughly once, and then place it in a cool place to slow down the growth.

6. Plastic surgery after flowering

There are many styles of gardenia bonsai, including straight trunk, curved trunk, slanted trunk, cliff style, etc. After flowering or during the dormant period, you can use materials such as brown wire and aluminum wire to bend the thick branches to increase the shape, and trim the dense and weak branches.

How to care for gardenia bonsai in summer?

1. Lighting

Gardenia does not like strong light. When the temperature is too high in summer, it needs to be properly shaded and placed in a place with scattered light indoors, and kept ventilated.

2. Watering

Gardenia likes moisture, and water evaporates quickly in summer. Water it once in the morning and evening every day. If the potting soil has poor air permeability, water it once every 1 to 2 days. Mist the leaves every day and maintain high air humidity.

3. Fertilization

Gardenia likes fertilizer. During the peak growing season, apply decomposed cake fertilizer water once every half a month or so. Reduce fertilization in hot weather and stop fertilizing when the temperature exceeds 35 degrees.

4. Repotting

Bonsai gardenias need to be repotted and the soil changed every 2 to 3 years, and the roots need to be pruned and shaped when repotting.

Dear flower lovers, it is actually very simple to cultivate old piles.
