The Legend of Sage

Maria was a mother on the run, hiding with her newborn baby from the brutal and child-killing King Herod. Passing by a village, the husband asked the villagers for help, but the villagers, who were cold-hearted by nature, just watched coldly. The husband went to find water, and the mother and child waited by the roadside. The approaching horse hooves in the distance hinted at the arrival of Herod's soldiers, and Mary held the child but had nowhere to hide.

In panic, Maria turned to the blooming rose beside her for help: Rose, please open all your petals and hide us. After the rose fiercely refused, Maria begged the lilac beside her: Lilac, lovely lilac, please open your body and hide this poor mother and child. Lilac shook her head and asked her to find the sage.

Maria came to the sage and said: Oh, sage, sage, please spread your branches and leaves to hide this innocent dying baby and the half-dead mother. Immediately, the sage quickly grew lush branches and leaves, covering the ground tightly. The soft leaves held up a canopy, completely hiding the mother and child.

The soldiers passed by and noticed nothing. The baby in Maria's arms smiled as the soft branches of the sage were touched.

Mary walked out from the green branches dotted with flowers, holding Jesus in her arms. Thank you so much, Sage. I pray that everyone will remember your good deed from now on.

From then on, roses grew thorns, lilacs smelled bad, and sage had many healing properties.
