Pest and disease control of gooseberries

Pest and disease control of gooseberries

1. Use pruning to prevent and control

When currants are sick, we can pick out some good branches and keep them, and then use professional tree pruners to cut off some of the diseased, insect-bitten, and old branches. Of course, don’t think that just cutting them off will be enough, we also need to destroy them thoroughly.

We gather the damaged branches that have been cut off and burn them collectively, thus completely destroying the source of the disease. This method can solve the problem of diseases and pests caused by the broken branches from the root.

2. Use chemical agents for prevention and control

Generally, the main diseases and pests of gooseberries are powdery mildew and clearwing moth. Powdery mildew mainly causes damage to leaves. The symptoms of the disease are white substances on the surface of the leaves or on the back, like fine powder. Then it gradually changes from white to dark brown. Later, it will be covered with small black particles, and will gradually spread to the petioles, fruit stalks and branches.

So this reminds us that we must plant the plants at a reasonable density, not too close, to ensure sufficient sunlight. Then if it is in the early stage of the disease, we can use some chemical drugs to mix and dilute, and then spray it. The commonly used drug is malathion, which is sprayed with 2000 times or 3000 times of solution. It can be sprayed continuously for 2 to 3 times.

The larvae of the clearwing moth usually damage the branches, buds and leaves of the gooseberry, which will then cause the leaves to slowly dry up and fall off. Therefore, you can also use the above medicine to spray this pest, and spray it 2 to 3 times in a row, so that you can effectively prevent and control the pest. Therefore, both methods are good ways to control insects.
