Maintenance tips for fortune trees

The money tree has become a popular ornamental plant for its beautiful appearance, but many flower lovers often encounter problems with root rot or yellowing and withering of leaves during the maintenance process. To keep the money tree thriving, it does require some specific care techniques. Let’s learn some maintenance tips for the money tree below.

1. Avoid strong direct sunlight

The money tree prefers a semi-shaded growing environment and is very sensitive to strong direct sunlight. If it is suddenly placed in direct sunlight, it can easily cause leaf sunburn and branch wilting. For long-term indoor maintenance or newly purchased money trees, the light should be gradually increased to avoid direct exposure to the sun. When caring for the money tree indoors, avoid placing it under direct light to avoid damaging the plant. At the same time, long-term lack of sunlight can also lead to poor growth and yellow leaves. Therefore, the money tree should be placed in a place with sufficient diffuse light to meet its growth needs.

2. Reasonable control of watering

The money tree likes a humid environment, but is also afraid of too much water. Many money tree root rot problems are caused by improper watering. The root system of the money tree is not well developed, and is mainly composed of some hairy roots with weak absorption capacity. When the potting soil remains moist for a long time, it is easy to cause root deprivation and rot. Therefore, when watering the money tree, you should avoid watering too frequently. Only water when the soil in the pot is dry, following the principle of "water when dry and water when wet".

3. Apply thin fertilizer frequently

When caring for the money tree, in addition to paying attention to watering, it is equally important to apply fertilizer properly. Excessive fertilization or the application of unfermented organic matter, such as peels, eggshells, tea residues, etc., may cause damage to the root system. Fertilizing the money tree should follow the principle of "thin fertilizer and frequent application", that is, applying fertilizer in small amounts and multiple times. During the growth period, you can regularly apply dilute liquid fertilizer, such as fermented rice water, milk water, fruit peel water, etc. If you have a lot of flowers at home, you can also use plant nutrient solution and water them 1 to 2 times a month to promote vigorous growth of the plants.

4. Keep warm

The money tree is native to the south and has poor cold resistance. When cared for in the north, it is easy to be frostbitten, causing the whole plant to wither. In winter, the money tree should be moved indoors in advance and the temperature should be kept above 10℃ to avoid yellowing and falling leaves caused by low temperature. In early spring, do not move the money tree outdoors too early, because the temperature is still unstable at this time, the temperature difference between day and night is large, and the plant is easily frozen. It is recommended to wait until after the Qingming Festival when the temperature is stable before moving it outdoors.

In short, caring for the money tree is not complicated. You just need to understand its growth habits, water and fertilize it properly, and avoid direct sunlight to avoid root rot and yellow leaves and make the plant grow more luxuriantly.
