When to prune clematis

When to prune clematis

1. Pruning time

Clematis is usually pruned in spring and autumn. It is about to sprout in spring and can recover quickly after pruning. Moreover, after winter, many branches have dried up and need to be pruned to promote the growth of new branches. In autumn, the plant enters a dormant period, and pruning will not cause nutrient loss.

2. How to prune

1. Spring pruning: Spring pruning is mainly for varieties that bloom in summer and autumn. Spring-flowering varieties should not be pruned at this time, otherwise it will lead to nutrient loss and difficulty in flowering. Summer flowering varieties need light pruning to promote the growth of new branches and accumulate nutrients. Autumn-flowering varieties need heavy pruning to prevent them from becoming too lush and affecting their growth.

2. Autumn pruning: Autumn pruning is generally only suitable for varieties that bloom in spring. Since there is no pruning in spring, the dense branches need to be cut off after the plant enters dormancy in autumn. Branches that are too long should also be shortened to promote their growth in the second year.

3. Pruning after flowering: Clematis needs to be pruned after flowering, which can encourage it to bloom again. Cut off the dead flowers in time, and for spring-flowering varieties, also cut off the extra branches. Do not prune too hard to avoid affecting its recovery.

4. Pruning after disease: Clematis also needs to be pruned after it becomes sick. Cut off diseased branches and leaves to prevent the disease from worsening and spreading. The cut diseased branches and leaves should not be thrown away randomly, but should be destroyed in a centralized manner to prevent residual pathogens.
