How deep should garlic be planted? (How deep should the soil be for garlic planting?)

Garlic is a vegetable that likes cool and moisture , and is generally planted in autumn from August to October.

The time of planting garlic will affect the emergence and growth of garlic seedlings. In addition to being related to the variety of garlic seedlings, it is also inseparable from the sowing process, such as the direction of the petals, sowing depth, sowing method, etc.

Therefore, if you want garlic to germinate quickly and have good growth, growers should pay attention to the following points when sowing :

When preparing the land before sowing, try to arrange the bed surface in a north-south direction to maximize the garlic's ability to receive better light during the growing period. The growth direction of the garlic stems and leaves should be perpendicular to the dorsal and ventral lines of the garlic cloves.

Therefore, when sowing, try to keep the dorsal and ventral lines of the garlic cloves consistent with the direction of the sowing row to ensure that the garlic leaves stretch and grow between the rows after emergence.

How deep should garlic be planted?

If you use an upright planting method, the bottom of the garlic seed should be facing down and inserted upright into the trench. Avoid inserting it at an angle. As the saying goes, "deep onions and shallow garlic", garlic should be sown shallowly, and the sowing depth should be kept at 3-5 cm .

If the seeds are sown too shallowly , it is easy to cause the "jumping garlic" phenomenon. When the seedlings emerge, the roots will push the garlic cloves out of the ground, causing the garlic skin to harden.

However, if the seeds are sown too deep , the garlic seedlings will emerge late and be weak, and the expansion of the garlic heads will be inhibited in the later stage, which will affect the garlic yield.

In addition, the planting depth of garlic is related to the planting season. Generally, the surface soil temperature is higher in spring, so the planting depth should not be too deep. In autumn, as the temperature drops, the planting can be appropriately deep to ensure early germination.

There are many ways to sow garlic, including flat-bed sowing, high-ridge sowing, etc., but I often use the first method .

How to sow garlic in the soil

Dig shallow furrows 5-6 cm deep on one side of the bed surface, with a row spacing of 17 cm, and first sprinkle 5 kg of chlorpyrifos granules per mu.

Then, we can place the garlic seeds neatly according to the spacing between plants, cover them with soil after sowing, press them down appropriately with a hoe after sowing to compact the soil, and rake the floor flat.

In addition, when sowing garlic in autumn, due to the high air and ground temperatures, water evaporation is also large. After cutting the garlic, you need to water it to lower the ground temperature. The amount of watering can be appropriately larger, but be careful to prevent the bed surface from being washed away or the garlic seeds from being washed out.
