How to make potted chives grow strong

Seeing this question, I can't help but think of why the chives in the vegetable garden can grow so fat and plump? It is mainly due to the growth environment.

No matter how much effort is put into the leeks on the balcony, they will not be as vigorous as the leeks in the open-air vegetable garden, so the leeks planted on the balcony grow very small .

How to grow chives to make them fat and strong requires more care. How to grow chives on the balcony to make them fat and strong? You need to be careful from planting to harvesting.

1. Seeds

You can grow chives by growing seedlings yourself or directly planting the chive roots.

Seedlings

When buying leek seeds, it is best to choose purple-root, drought-resistant, cold-resistant, and late-sprouting varieties. Generally, purple-root leeks have a strong flavor and taste more fragrant.

Wash the leek seeds twice in water. The ones floating on the water are the shrunken seeds. Soak the remaining full seeds in clean water for about 8 hours before sowing. The seedlings will emerge in a dozen days, and they can be planted in holes after 2 months, with 20 to 30 plants in each hole.

Leek root propagation

Leek roots may carry diseases, insects and bacteria, such as anthrax, damping-off and other viruses. Soaking them in potassium permanganate solution for 10 minutes and then taking them out can reduce diseases and insect pests.

2. Soil

The best soil for growing leeks is garden soil + humus soil, which is slightly acidic. You can add decomposed organic fertilizers such as sheep manure, chicken manure, etc. to make the soil rich in organic matter, loose and breathable, which is conducive to the growth of leeks.

Disinfect the soil at high temperature before planting to eliminate pests and pathogens in the soil.

3. Lighting

Chives are very light-loving vegetables. The more light they get, the faster they grow. On the contrary, insufficient light or short light exposure time will affect their growth.

4. Watering

Soil compaction and drought will affect the quality of chives. Generally, the soil is dry and wet. If the soil is wet, it will cause root rot, and the chives will become weaker and weaker. Do not water immediately after harvesting. It is best to wait 3 days before watering. Till the soil to keep it breathable.

5. Harvest

The harvesting time of leek is about 25 to 30 days. Do not harvest too frequently, otherwise it will cause it to grow longer and thinner. Do not harvest leek close to the roots. 5 cm above the roots is the standard.

6. Fertilization

Apply fertilizer every time you harvest. The most convenient thing is wood ash. You can also dilute it with homemade nutrient water and water the roots. This way the leeks will grow fat and strong and you can eat them one crop after another.
