Does mint need to be pruned? What are the precautions for pruning?

Pruning is good for mint, as it can keep its plant shape beautiful. When the branches and stems of flowers and plants grow to a certain height, timely pruning, pinching and topping can inhibit the height and direction of the plant, promote the germination of axillary buds in the lower part, make it produce more new branches, and grow more luxuriantly .

Mint pruning time

The pruning time of mint is divided into seedling stage, after flowering, growth period and dormant period. Regular pruning in these stages can make the mint grow more vigorously and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

How to prune mint

When the mint grows to 8 to 10 centimeters in the seedling stage, the buds on the top need to be cut off to promote the growth of side branches and avoid the risk of excessive growth and lodging. You can continue to prune after the branches grow long. In summer, the dead flowers should be cut off in time after the flowers fade, because flowering will continue to consume nutrients. Smaller and weaker branches should also be cut off to reduce nutrient loss.

During the growing season, some thicker branches can be cut off to increase internal light transmission and ventilation, and also provide space for new branches to grow. During the dormant period of mint, some dead branches and rotten leaves should be cut off, and those with insect eggs need to be dealt with in time. For some branches that are not growing well, they can also be shortened by about three to five centimeters to make its nutrient supply more concentrated.
