Garlic and onion planting method and time when is the best time to plant

Suitable planting time for garlic and onion

Garlic and onions prefer a cooler environment. The best growing period is generally from August to September, so they are usually planted in autumn. If they are grown in a greenhouse, they can also be planted in winter.

Garlic and onion planting methods and key points

1. Seed selection

When garlic and onions are mature, choose some onions with larger stems and leaves above ground. The bulbs can be removed by digging the soil at the stems. Select larger, fuller, disease-free bulbs and collect them. Place them in a dry, sealed environment to prevent moisture loss.

2. Planting method

Garlic and onions are generally planted in holes and rows. For hole planting, two bulbs are generally placed in a small hole, covered with fine soil, lightly pressed, and then watered to keep it moist. This is conducive to close integration with the soil and rapid rooting.

Row sowing is to dig a trench about 5 cm deep on the ground, and evenly spread the covering soil directly in the trench. After the bulbs are buried in the ground, no new roots will be produced, so they should be watered with light fertilizer every other day, until a week later, when they should be watered every three days.

Key points for daily management of garlic and onion

1. Temperature: Garlic and onion are plants with very strong adaptability to temperature. The highest temperature they can tolerate is 45 degrees, and the lowest temperature they can endure in winter is minus 10 degrees. After sowing, it is best to maintain the temperature between 13-35 degrees, which is more conducive to increasing its yield.

2. Watering: Garlic and onion are relatively drought-resistant, but not waterlogged. Because there is a layer of wax on the surface of its leaves, it has a strong ability to resist drought. Therefore, do not water it excessively. After the rain, the accumulated water in the field must be drained in time.
