How and when to plant cilantro in autumn

Autumn is the best time to plant coriander

The suitable temperature for coriander to germinate is between 16 and 18 degrees. Within this temperature range, coriander grows faster and grows well. If planted in autumn, it can be done around August to September in the north, and in September to October in the warm areas of the south.

Coriander planting methods and key points

1. Seed selection and processing: When planting coriander, you need to choose the right variety. Large-leaf coriander has a higher yield, but a lighter fragrance, while small-leaf coriander has a lower yield, but a stronger fragrance. Small-leaf coriander is also more cold-resistant and adaptable.

2. Seed treatment: Remove the shells of coriander seeds, soak them in clean water for about 24 hours, take them out after the seeds absorb water and swell, wrap the seeds in moist gauze, and place them in an environment of 15-20℃ for germination. They will germinate in about 7-10 days.

3. Land preparation and fertilization: Choose fertile, air-permeable soil with good water and fertilizer retention properties, apply well-rotted farmyard manure, remove the residues of the previous crop, deep plow and fine harrow, and then make ridges. The ridge width should be about 1-1.5 meters and the length should be about 8-10 meters.

4. Sowing: Pour enough water into the soil, and after the water has penetrated, you can sow the seeds. Cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing. Thin out the seedlings after germination, remove the weaker seedlings, and apply fertilizer in time after thinning. It can be done together with watering, and weeding should be done in time.

Points to note for daily management of coriander

1. Provide nutrients

When growing coriander in autumn, it is necessary to apply fertilizer once before winter. You can apply decomposed organic fertilizer and farmyard manure, or you can use nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer to provide coriander with the nutrients needed for growth. It can also improve the plant's cold resistance and prevent coriander from being frostbitten by low temperatures.

2. Sufficient water

When growing coriander, you need to provide it with sufficient water. You can water it once a week to keep the soil moist and promote the healthy growth of coriander. You also need to increase the frequency of watering during the vigorous growth period of coriander. You can water it every three days to prevent the coriander leaves from drying out and turning yellow due to lack of water.
