How to prune calamus

When to prune calamus

The general time for pruning calamus is September. The temperature at this time is suitable, which can help the wounds of the pruned plants heal quickly and will not affect the growth of the plants themselves.

The cuttings for calamus cuttings can be cut from the rhizome 2-3cm below the short stem or horizontal stem and leaf node. Choose a clay pot as the cutting pot, fill it with 2/3 of sand, stand the cuttings upright and fill it with sand so that the sand is higher than the growth point of the stem. After cutting, put the cutting pot in water with a depth of more than 10 cm and the water temperature between 24 and 28℃. It will take root in half a month.

Pruning calamus leaves

When pruning calamus, remove the withered leaves and branches. There will be a small number of leaves in the middle of the plant, which should also be removed in time to encourage the sprouting of new leaves and keep it vibrant.

Tips for pruning calamus

When pruning calamus, you should clean up the remaining leaves that fall into the pot, and also clean up other things in the pot that affect the appearance, so that the bonsai looks cleaner and tidier.

After cutting off all the old leaves of calamus with scissors, pay attention to the degree and shape of the trimming of the leaves. We can cut off the parts that are about 3-5 cm high from the base, and keep them as even as possible.

Notes on pruning calamus

Water the calamus thoroughly before pruning it, and do not let the wounds after pruning come into contact with water, as they will easily rot. Also pay attention to watering afterwards, and place it in a cool and ventilated place. After the wounds heal in a few weeks, return to normal management.
