Applying sufficient base fertilizer before planting asparagus can increase the organic matter in the soil and improve the soil's ability to retain water and fertilizer, thereby ensuring a good yield of asparagus. The time to apply base fertilizer is mostly before the frost in autumn each year, between September and October.

How to apply base fertilizer for asparagus

1. When preparing the soil , do not dig too shallow trenches for fertilization. Generally, dig trenches about 50 cm away from the rhizomes, with a width of 20 cm and a depth of about 30 cm. After fertilization, water the soil appropriately to facilitate root absorption.

2. Choose base fertilizer. Base fertilizer should be organic fertilizer or well-rotted high-quality farm manure, which can provide the root system with a variety of nutrients for a long time. However, be careful not to apply fresh farm manure, otherwise it will burn the roots.

3. The amount of base fertilizer used : Generally, each acre of asparagus requires about 2,000 kg of farmyard manure and about 50 kg of potassium-containing compound fertilizer. Base fertilizer should be applied in autumn every year. If the fertilizer is applied too late, the asparagus will not be able to absorb it easily.

How to apply base fertilizer to asparagus

During the asparagus seedling stage, quick-acting fertilizers can be applied, 8-10 kg of urea or 10-20 kg of compound fertilizer per mu of land; before the plants enter autumn growth, dig trenches and apply 3000-4000 kg of farmyard manure or other organic fertilizers, and 10 kg each of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

Before spring harvest, the land can be ploughed and ridged, furrows can be dug between rows, and about 20 kg of compound fertilizer and urea can be applied per mu of land. 1000-1500 kg of decomposed and sieved organic fertilizer can also be applied.
