Pomegranate cutting time and method

Pomegranate cutting time and method

Pomegranate cutting time

Pomegranate cuttings are divided into spring cuttings, summer green branch cuttings and autumn cuttings. Spring cuttings are generally carried out when the branches are about to sprout, and the survival rate is very high. Summer is the rainy season, the rainfall is relatively heavy, and the survival rate of cuttings is also very high. Autumn cuttings are usually carried out from White Dew to Autumnal Equinox, and the time should not be too late.

Pomegranate cutting method

1. Variety selection

The first thing to do before pomegranate cuttings is to select a good mother plant. Generally, a pomegranate tree in its peak fruit-bearing period with a pure variety, strong growth, no disease sources, high productivity, and strong resistance to adversity is selected as the mother plant.

2. Cutting method

Choose strong one-year-old or two-year-old branches with a thickness of at least 0.5 cm. Such branches are easier to survive. It is generally best to prune the branches at 10-15 cm. Cut the lower end of the cuttings into an oblique shape to increase the water absorption area and make the roots germinate faster.

3. Cutting method

Prepare the seedbed in advance, spray water after leveling, and poke some holes on the seedbed before cutting, with a depth of about 8 cm and a plant spacing of about 10 cm. Then gently insert the cuttings into the holes and lightly compact the soil.

Pomegranate cutting maintenance

After the pomegranate cuttings are completed, pay attention to keeping the soil moist and cover it with a layer of transparent plastic film to keep it warm and moist. Generally, branches planted in spring and summer can be transplanted in the second year after one year of growth. Those planted in autumn will be later and can only be transplanted after another year.
