When is the right time to prune roses?

Roses are generally pruned in spring, between January and March, when the temperature begins to rise. The pruned branches recover quickly, and you can also choose a tender branch of about 13 cm for cutting propagation.

Rose pruning tips

Pruning after new shoots grow: Pruning can be done after new shoots swell, that is, when they sprout. When the new shoots of the seedlings grow to 30 cm, two-thirds of the branches can be cut off. If it is less than 30 cm, half of the branches need to be cut off. When pruning, it is necessary to prune at a 45-degree angle, and the incision should be about 0.5 cm above the axillary buds.

Pruning during dormancy: When frost arrives, the roses will enter a dormant period, and at this time, they should also be pruned. This pruning is mainly to cut off useless branches, and to remove dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, cross branches, and weak branches from the base. The tender branches that sprout after autumn are difficult to grow, so they should also be cut off.

Pruning after flowering: Roses have strong germination ability and luxuriant branches and leaves. If the maintenance environment is not suitable, they are prone to diseases and insect pests, so pruning should be done after the flowering period. Cut off the withered flowers and shorten the long flowering branches appropriately. If the flowers bloom on old branches, the old branches can be cut off after flowering.

Pruning branches and leaves: Roses usually need to prune dead branches, thin branches, etc. Before pruning, wipe the scissors with alcohol, prune at a 45-degree angle, and choose the position above the bud. After pruning, apply a layer of white glue on the cut to effectively avoid interference from pests and diseases.

When pruning roses in winter, pay attention to cutting off diseased and dead branches. After pruning, the diseased branches should be cleaned and burned in time to prevent diseases. Avoid getting them wet after pruning, and you can apply white glue or wood ash on the cut.
