How to care for potted roses in winter

Are potted roses afraid of freezing?

Potted roses are not cold-resistant, so they are afraid of freezing in winter. The most suitable temperature for their growth period is 20-35℃ during the day and 12-15℃ at night. They like a warm environment.

How to care for potted roses in winter

1. Lighting

Generally, when potted roses are cared for in winter, they need to be placed in a sunny and ventilated place during the day. The branches and leaves can continue to differentiate with the help of the sun, allowing them to grow better.

2. Water and fertilizer management

During the maintenance of potted roses in winter, the amount of watering needs to be controlled. Usually, water them once every half a month. After pruning in winter, you can apply rotten cake fertilizer, which will make the flowers bloom more brightly next year and can also help the potted roses survive the winter.

3. Fertilization

Roses like fertilizer very much. Generally, they should be fertilized 4 to 5 times a year, once in March in early spring and once in May to promote flowering, but it is best not to fertilize in winter.

4. Indoor insulation

When growing potted roses in winter, the temperature should not be lower than 3~4℃, especially when the temperature drops below 0℃ in the evening. Use air conditioning, heating equipment, etc. to maintain the temperature at around 5℃, and potted roses can safely overwinter.

5. Pruning

In late autumn and early winter, when the ambient temperature drops below 5°C, you can trim off the dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, crossed branches, and overlapping branches of potted roses.

Precautions for winter cultivation of potted roses

1. Pruning potted roses before winter can reduce the nutrient consumption of the plants and reduce the space they occupy indoors during the winter. At the same time, fertilizers should be applied before winter.

2. Ventilate regularly, preferably on sunny days or at noon when the temperature is high. When ventilating potted roses, be careful not to let the cold wind blow directly onto the plants to avoid adverse reactions.

3. Potted roses like light and sunshine, are cold-resistant and drought-resistant. In winter, they only need to be moved indoors for maintenance. No special anti-freeze measures are required. They are not demanding on the soil. Generally, they grow vigorously in fertile soil, have luxuriant branches and leaves, and bloom well.

4. Generally speaking, winters in northern regions are very cold. For potted rose plants kept indoors, the room temperature must not be lower than 4℃ to 5℃ so that they can safely overwinter.
