Peanut planting time and growth period

Peanut planting time and growth period

In the process of planting peanuts , understanding and mastering the planting time and growth period is crucial to improving the quality and yield of peanuts. So when is the best time to plant peanuts? What are the stages of its growth period? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is the peanut planting time?

The planting time of peanuts varies depending on region and climate, but generally speaking, spring and summer are the best time to plant peanuts. In the northern regions, spring sowing is generally carried out in late March to early April; in the southern regions, due to the warmer climate, sowing can be carried out in advance in late February to early March. Summer sowing is mainly suitable for southern regions and is generally carried out from June to July.

How many stages does the growth period of peanuts consist of?

1. Germination and emergence stage

The seed germination and emergence period, or simply the emergence period, is from sowing to 50% of the seedlings emerging from the soil and unfolding the first true leaf (compound leaf). Peanuts do not need too much water during this period, so it is not advisable to water them too frequently. Just keep the soil moist, with plenty of sunlight and good ventilation.

2. Seedling stage

The seedling stage is from the time when half of the seeds germinate to the time when the first flower on half of the plants blooms. The seedling stage is generally 20-35 days. The management characteristics of this period are to promote nodule formation and flower bud differentiation, and pay attention to preventing root rot and stem base rot diseases.

3. Flowering and needle placement period

The flowering and needle-setting period is from when 50% of the plants bloom to when 50% of the plants have chicken-head-shaped young fruits. During this growth period, the vegetative growth and reproductive growth of peanuts proceed simultaneously, a large number of nodules are formed, and the nitrogen fixation ability becomes stronger. At this time, there must be sufficient sunlight, fertilizer and water to ensure that the fruit needles are buried in the soil.

4. Pod-setting period

The pod-setting period is from the appearance of chicken-head-shaped young fruits on half of the plants to the appearance of full fruits on half of the plants. The pod-setting period is generally 20-40 days. During this period, the nutritional growth of peanuts reaches its peak, the temperature is high and the light is sufficient, so it is necessary to ensure sufficient water. At the same time, pay attention to preventing and controlling dead seedlings and pests, and you can also apply appropriate foliar fertilization to prevent premature aging and promote pod development.

5. Fruit maturity

The full fruit maturity period is from when 50% of the plants have full fruits to when most of the pods are full and mature. The key management points during this period are mainly to promote secondary expansion of the fruit and prevent premature aging of the crop.

In general, peanut cultivation is widely distributed in my country, but due to differences in geographical location, climatic conditions and variety characteristics, its planting time and growth period also show certain differences. But no matter what the differences are, being familiar with their growth habits and doing a good job of management at each growth stage is the only way to ensure that peanuts achieve high quality and high yield.
